VW Transporter T5 T6 T6.1: Maximum Roof Load (Dynamic & Static) – with Calculation Examples (incl. Roof Racks)
Denis KhristolyubovAccording to a document from November 2023 (VW Commercial Vehicles "Body Building Guidelines – The Transporter"), the limits for dynamic roof load (driving operation) and the rules for static roof load (stationary operation, e.g., roof tent) are specified in Chapter 2.3.1 "Roof Loads".
Many confuse "roof load" during driving with the load when stationary (e.g., roof tent + people). Volkswagen clearly distinguishes here:
-
Dynamic roof load = load during driving
-
Static roof load = load only when stationary (vehicle not moving)
1) Dynamic Roof Load (Driving Operation): VW Limits
Volkswagen specifies the following maximum roof load during driving for the Transporter (November 2023 edition), among others:
-
Standard roof (≥ 3 base carriers): 150 kg
This is our case: For the VW Transporter T5/T6/T6.1 with a standard roof (short and long wheelbase), our Airholder roof rack is designed with ≥ 3 base carriers – thus, the VW limit of 150 kg dynamic roof load applies. -
Standard roof (with 2 base carriers): 100 kg
-
High roof: 0 kg
-
Double cab (with 2 base carriers): 75 kg
-
Cab: 50 kg
-
Pop-up roof (with 2 base carriers): 50 kg
Important: The dynamic roof load always includes everything mounted on the roof: roof rack + accessories + cargo.
2) Static Roof Load (Stationary Operation): Roof Tent Rule up to 300 kg
For use with a roof tent, VW specifies the following rules:
-
max. 300 kg with even load distribution
-
only when stationary (vehicle not moving)
-
use all available screw connections in the roof area for roof racks
-
for roof rails: at least 4 load bars
-
driving with static roof load is expressly prohibited
Calculation Examples (Roof Rack + Roof Tent + Awning + Largest Water Tank)
Note: In all examples, the weight of the roof rack is already included (roof load = roof rack + accessories + cargo).
Assumptions (example values):
-
Roof rack (example): 33 kg
-
Roof tent: 70 kg
-
Awning: 20 kg
-
Dynamic limit (our case): 150 kg for standard roof with ≥ 3 base carriers
A) Driving (dynamic 150 kg): Roof Rack + Roof Tent + Awning (without water tank)
33 + 70 + 20 = 123 kg
➡️ Permissible, remaining up to 150 kg: 27 kg
B) Driving (dynamic 150 kg): Roof Rack + Roof Tent + Awning + Water Tank (36 L, largest version)
Your water system (36 liters, without accessories):
-
Empty weight: 18 kg
-
Filled weight: 54 kg
B1) Water tank full (54 kg) – not permissible for driving
33 + 70 + 20 + 54 = 177 kg
➡️ Not permissible, as it exceeds 150 kg dynamic roof load.
B2) Water tank empty (18 kg) – permissible for driving
33 + 70 + 20 + 18 = 141 kg
➡️ Permissible, remaining: 9 kg
B3) Partial filling: How much water would be maximally possible?
Without tank: 33 + 70 + 20 = 123 kg → remaining 27 kg up to 150 kg.
27 − 18 = 9 kg ≈ 9 liters of water
➡️ With roof rack + roof tent + awning, you can only drive the 36-L tank on the roof with approx. 9 liters of water while driving; otherwise, the 150-kg limit will be exceeded.
